Siegfried the Seagull
Siegfried the seagull sat on the sand
Surveying the sea that was close at hand
A swarm of associates gathered around
To see if some supper lay strewn on the ground
Not a scrap to be found – a most sorry sight
He’d have to start looking before it was night
His stomach was churning with signs of starvation
Just a leftover morsel could be his salvation
He mustered incentive and soared to the sky
To attempt some «I spy with my little eye»
Flapping around in an affable way
A mid-air collision nearly caused him to sway
He spotted some bathers convening quite near
And landed to watch them all swigging their beer
Two women were laughing and having a joke
Manufacturing snacks for their ravenous folk
As Siegfried’s relations began closing in
Their screeches of hunger were almost deafening
The innocent picnickers started to eat
All covered in sand from their heads to their feet
Siegfried was watching and ready to swoop
A handy bread roll would be a good coup
When all of a sudden a sweet little boy
With a smile on his face and quite radiant with joy
Held out his hand towards Siegfried and said
«Come here little seagull, I’ll give you some bread»
Siegfried was startled at this invitation
But went for the grabs without hesitation
He dived at the bread and snatched it at once
Showing his know-how in high-flying stunts
As if on command, a bustle of birds
Pounced on poor Siegfried in fluffy white herds
When fighting broke out he was right in the middle
But his much cherished picnic was really quite little
Confusion was perfect and so was the noise
A magnificent pastime for cute little boys
His parents – alarmed at the chaos around
Just stared up in awe at the terrible sound
The squawking persisted and so did the fight
And hundreds more seagulls arrived in full flight
All circling and squawking and fighting for crumbs
Eventually Siegfried forlornly succumbs
Keeping a fragment of bread in his beak
He let go of the rest with his tongue in his cheek
His action unleashed the most terrible brawl
As hundreds of seagulls created a squall
He took off unnoticed to gobble his dinner
Knowing that no one could land up the winner
Seagulls were flapping in every direction
Trying to steal titbits without detection
The chaos was perfect, the noise was tremendous
The battleground turned into something horrendous
Our cute little boy had by now run away
Afraid of the sequel if he were to stay
The picnickers gathered their gear in great haste
To flee from the region regardless of waste
They scuttled around in one hell of a hurry
While seagulls were causing a regular scurry
As fate would then have it, when birds get worked up
The area beneath them tends to nearly erupt
White substance was raining in blobs from the skies
Transforming the earth to a whitish disguise
Our targets disbanded to avoid getting hit
Frightened that they would get covered with –it!
As the birds were dispersing and flying away
The humans were trying to keep droppings at bay
They finally reached a beach café quite near
And hurried inside where the coast was all clear
Their appearance created some loud exclamations
As our sunbathers looked like inverted Dalmatians
The rest of the punters couldn’t quite trust their eyes
As they gazed at these people in befitting surprise
Embarrassed, they wanted to sink through the floor
But dived for the toilets, ashamed to the core
It took dreadfully long to mop up their disgrace
But finally emerged with amazing good grace
The rest of the clients applauded like mad
To help the «bombarded» not feel quite so bad
As they recovered and enjoyed some strong drinks
They noticed the gulls had now stopped their high jinx
The birds were recumbent as if they were stuffed
Or the effort of fighting had left them quite puffed
Our cute little boy noticed one lonely gull
Standing all on his own in an introvert lull
He questioned himself whether that was the one
Who had started this most debatable «fun»
The bird looked so harmless and wrapped up in thought
As though he could do with some moral support
But our cute little boy was now suddenly wise
And vowed he would never again sympathise
Humans are caring but aren’t a trustee
As a take-away scheme for a bird colony!
